Hennepin County Marriage and Divorce Records

Hennepin County marriage and divorce records live in two different custodians. Marriage licenses and certified marriage certificates come from Hennepin County Service Centers and Vital Records, which is a county office. Divorce decrees come from Hennepin County District Court Family Court, which is a court office. A Hennepin County marriage records search and a Hennepin County divorce records search use different forms, different fees, and different rules for access. Knowing which custodian holds the document is the first step toward a clean lookup, especially for couples who married in Hennepin and later divorced in another Minnesota county.

Hennepin County Marriage License Requirements

Hennepin County Service Centers issue marriage licenses. Minnesota residency is not required. Both applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of the wedding. The county requires applicants to submit applicant information online first when possible, then finalize the application and pay in person. Skipping the online step makes the in-person appointment longer.

Both applicants should attend the appointment together. If one applicant cannot attend, Hennepin requires a Party Not Appearing form, the license application with a notarized signature, and a proof-of-age document copy for the absent party. The non-appearing process uses a separate PDF package that includes the notarized form and the absent-party identification.

Hennepin County Marriage License Fees

Hennepin marriage license fees are set by the county. The reduced fee requires proof of premarital education. The reduced-fee option uses an educator's statement PDF that the educator signs and dates.

FeeAmountConditions
Regular marriage license$125Nonrefundable.
Reduced marriage license$50Requires 12 hours of premarital education plus educator's statement PDF.
Certified marriage certificate or license copy$9Issued by Hennepin only if Hennepin issued the original license.
Marriage certificate correction$40Nonrefundable review fee.

Payment is taken at the Service Center during the in-person appointment. Credit cards, debit cards, and other county-approved methods are accepted at the Service Center. Cash policies vary by location and should be confirmed before the appointment.

How to Apply for a Hennepin County Marriage License

The license application flow follows a few steps. The most common mistake is skipping the online pre-application, which makes the in-person appointment slower.

  1. Open the Hennepin marriage license page and submit applicant information online.
  2. Gather the documents listed in the confirmation screen and email.
  3. Bring identification such as a driver's license, state ID, or birth certificate to the appointment.
  4. Schedule an appointment at a Hennepin County Service Center, or visit during walk-in hours; appointments save time.
  5. Both applicants confirm information, review and approve the license, pay, and receive the license packet.
  6. The ceremony can occur anywhere in Minnesota; a civil ceremony at a Service Center is also available.
  7. The officiant files the marriage certificate after the ceremony.
  8. Hennepin mails or makes available a certified marriage certificate after recording.

Certified Marriage Records in Hennepin County

Hennepin marriage records are issued in two formats. A certified marriage certificate verifies that the marriage took place. A certified marriage license verifies that a license was applied for. Hennepin can issue certified copies only if Hennepin issued the original marriage license. Hennepin needs the correct marriage date and applicant names; if details are unknown, the office can search the records.

Regular processing is within three weeks of receipt for mailing or pickup; mailing time is extra. Fax options include VitalChek online payment and authorization fax, or a hand-completed application sent with a fax coversheet to 612-348-2010. Marriage certificate correction rules changed for marriages issued on or after August 18, 2025; the Hennepin marriage records page has the current rule.

VitalChek is a third-party service that some counties use for online vital records payment. Hennepin notes VitalChek as one option for marriage record copies. Walk-in pickup is also available at Service Centers during normal business hours. Marriage records older than the digital system limit may require an extended manual search; the Service Center can confirm.

Hennepin County Divorce Records

Divorce records are not Vital Records. They are Hennepin County District Court Family Court records. The Hennepin Family Court page confirms that one spouse must live in Minnesota for at least 180 days before starting a divorce, and to file in Hennepin Family Court, one spouse must live in Hennepin County. After a judge signs the final divorce decree, Court Administration enters it into the official record as a final Judgment and Decree.

Family Court sits at the Family Justice Center, 110 South 4th Street, Minneapolis, on floors 1, 4, 5, and 6. Certified copies of divorce decrees should be requested from the Hennepin District Court Records Center, not Hennepin Vital Records. MCRO may show case information and court-prepared orders or notices, but remote family documents are limited.

  2. Use Minnesota Judicial Branch divorce forms and self-help resources.
  3. File in Family Court at the Family Justice Center, or electronically if required or eligible.

How to Search Hennepin Divorce Records

A Hennepin divorce file is searched through MCRO Case Search. Pick Family as the Case Category and select Hennepin in the county list. Search by party name when both names are known, or by case number when you have one. Family case numbers use the 27FA prefix. Pending family cases follow the regular MCRO rules, but most party-filed family documents are blocked from remote view. Court-prepared orders, opinions, and notices may appear.

If a divorce was filed in a different Minnesota county, the same MCRO portal works because it covers every district court in the state. Adjust the county selection to match where the case was filed. If the divorce was filed in another state, that state's court system holds the record. Hennepin Family Court cannot issue certified divorce decrees for divorces filed elsewhere.

Annulments, Legal Separations, and Name Changes

Hennepin Family Court handles annulments, legal separations, paternity, and name change petitions in addition to divorce. An annulment voids a marriage that was never legally valid; the case file looks similar to a divorce file but with different relief. A legal separation does not end the marriage but separates property and support obligations. A name change can be filed as part of a divorce or as a stand-alone civil case under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 259.

Family Court forms are at the Minnesota Judicial Branch Forms page. Fee waivers under in forma pauperis rules can apply to qualifying low-income filers. The Hennepin Self-Help email contact is listed on the District Court contact page.

Volunteer Lawyers Network and Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid help qualifying low-income clients with family-law issues. Mitchell Hamline Self-Help Center clinics include free family-law clinics. The Hennepin County Law Library, at the Government Center, holds form books, treatises, and procedural rules useful for pro se family-law filers.
