How to Search Hennepin County Traffic Court Records
Hennepin traffic cases are searched through MCRO Case Search. The Citation Number tab is the fastest path when you have the citation as printed on the ticket. The Case Number tab works once the citation has been opened as a case file. The Name tab is limited for traffic because pending no-conviction traffic and petty misdemeanor cases do not return by defendant name.
- Open MCRO Case Search and accept the terms.
- Pick the Citation Number tab if you have the citation. Enter the number exactly as printed.
- If you only have a case number, switch to the Case Number tab.
- If you have only a name and date of birth, open Additional Search Options. Add date filters and select Hennepin in the county list.
- Click Search and open the result. The Register of Actions shows hearing dates, dispositions, fines, and warrant events.
- To pay, switch to the Minnesota Judicial Branch Pay a Fine page.
- To contest, follow the Hennepin Criminal and Traffic Division and Violations / Hearing Office instructions.
Which Courts Handle Traffic Cases in Hennepin County
All Hennepin traffic cases route through the Minnesota District Court / Hennepin Criminal and Traffic Division. Minnesota does not have a separate county-level traffic court or a justice of the peace traffic court. City-issued citations, State Patrol citations, and county law enforcement citations all flow into the statewide District Court case management system once a court file is created. The Hennepin Violations / Hearing Office handles many petty misdemeanor and traffic calendars.
Hearings can be held at the Government Center, Public Safety Facility, Brookdale, or Ridgedale depending on the case calendar. The hearing notice lists the building and courtroom. The jail roster's next-court category code uses 1 for DOWNTOWN, 2 for RIDGEDALE, and 3 for BROOKDALE.
Types of Traffic Cases on Record
Hennepin traffic case records cover a wide range of charges. Most are petty misdemeanors. Some are misdemeanors or gross misdemeanors. DWI and DUI cases are criminal traffic and overlap with the criminal records page.
- Petty misdemeanor traffic: speeding, stop sign or light, equipment, insurance, registration, tabs, seat belt, distracted driving.
- Misdemeanor or gross misdemeanor traffic: driving after suspension, revocation, or cancellation; no insurance in some contexts; reckless or careless driving; some hit-and-run cases.
- DWI / DUI: criminal traffic; routes through the Criminal and Traffic Division. Repeat impaired-driving cases may involve DWI Court after conviction.
- Parking: many city parking citations are handled administratively by city systems and do not always appear in MCRO unless contested or escalated.
- Juvenile traffic: may have confidentiality and juvenile-case handling depending on age and offense.
- Commercial driver / CDL: CDL consequences are governed by state and federal driver licensing rules; the court disposition is separate from DVS reporting.

Paying or Contesting a Hennepin Traffic Ticket
Most payable citations can be resolved through the Minnesota Judicial Branch Pay a Fine page. Contested citations require a hearing through the Hennepin Criminal and Traffic Division or the Violations / Hearing Office. Some citations require a mandatory court appearance, which the ticket itself states.

The Pay a Fine page shown above is the official channel for online payment. It supports citation-number or case-number lookups and accepts standard payment methods. Payment of a payable offense is treated as resolving or admitting the offense, with possible DVS reporting.
- Read the citation for the court location, due date, payable amount, and mandatory-appearance language.
- Search the citation in MCRO or open it through the Pay a Fine page.
- If payable and not contesting, follow the court payment instructions.
- If contesting, request a hearing or follow Hennepin Criminal and Traffic Division / Hearing Office instructions.
- If court is required, attend at the listed Hennepin location: Government Center, Public Safety Facility, Brookdale, or Ridgedale.
- If you miss a court date, a warrant or failure-to-appear consequence may follow; use the warrant helpline for eligible warrants.
- After disposition, check MCRO for the result and DVS for licensing consequences if needed.
Public Access Laws for Traffic Court Records
Traffic court records follow the same rules as other criminal court records. The Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch and judiciary statutes control access. Rule 8 sets remote-access limits. Minn. Stat. § 13.90 confirms that judiciary data follow judicial branch rules. Minn. Stat. § 13.87 applies to criminal history data, including traffic convictions linked to fingerprint records.
Pending no-conviction traffic and petty misdemeanor cases are not returned by defendant name in MCRO. Search by citation number when you have an active ticket. After a conviction is entered, the case can appear in name searches and may appear on the BCA Public Criminal History Search for the eligible categories.
Court Traffic Records vs State Driver Records
Court traffic records and state driver records are different files. The court file holds the case information. The state driver record holds licensing actions reported to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS).
| Court Traffic Record | State Driver Record | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Minnesota Judicial Branch / Hennepin District Court | Minnesota DPS / Driver and Vehicle Services |
| What It Shows | Citation, case number, hearings, plea, disposition, fines, warrants, orders. | License status, reportable convictions, withdrawals, suspensions, revocations, reportable accidents. |
| Where to Access | MCRO and Hennepin Records Center. | DVS driver and vehicle records requests. |
| How to Correct | Motion or hearing in the District Court case. | Contact DVS Records Unit; some corrections require the underlying court order. |

The DVS records request page above is the route for driver records and vehicle records. The DVS record request form has fields for the requester, the type of record, the driver's identifying information, and a permissible-use reason when requesting another person's record.
CDL and Commercial Driver Records
Commercial driver license consequences follow strict state and federal rules. A traffic violation in a commercial vehicle, or a serious violation in any vehicle by a CDL holder, can trigger reportable disqualifications. The court disposition is separate from DVS reporting; a CDL holder should not assume that a plea or amended charge eliminates the CDL consequence. Consult a CDL-aware attorney for serious or repeat violations.
DUI and DWI Cases in Hennepin County
DWI and DUI cases are criminal traffic cases. They route through the Hennepin Criminal and Traffic Division. Repeat impaired-driving offenders may be eligible for DWI Court after conviction. DWI Court is voluntary and runs a minimum 18-month program with intensive supervision, frequent testing, and judicial review. For arrest details and the difference between an arrest record and a conviction record, see Hennepin County arrest records.
Deferred Adjudication and Defensive Driving Course
Some Minnesota traffic cases are eligible for resolution paths that avoid a conviction on the driver record. Continued or deferred dispositions, stays of imposition, or defensive driving course completion may reduce licensing impact. Eligibility depends on the charge, prior history, and prosecutor policy. The Hennepin Criminal and Traffic Division can explain whether a case is eligible.
Sealing or Expunging Traffic Records
Most pure petty misdemeanor traffic citations do not produce a public criminal history entry but do produce a court case file. The Minnesota expungement framework under Chapter 609A applies to eligible criminal cases. Petitioners should pull MCRO case details, BCA criminal history, dispositions, and probation discharge information before filing. Hennepin juvenile expungement forms are approved for Fourth District use only.
Fees for Hennepin Traffic Record Copies
Hennepin court copy fees apply to traffic case files. DVS sets its own driver record fees. Cash bail and warrant payment have their own rules at the jail.
| Item | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Plain copy of court document | No fee per Hennepin Copy Request Form | Records Center |
| Certified copy of court document | $14 each | Records Center |
| Driver record for own record | $10.00 | DVS Record Request Form |
| Driver record for another person | $10.50 | DVS Record Request Form; permissible-use reason required |
Note: A court dismissal or payment may take time to reach DVS. Confirm license status directly with DVS if it controls a decision.
